Biografia
Grammy-nominated artist Wintley Phipps was born in Trinidad and Tobago. His family relocated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada when he was young. He attended Kingsway College Academy in Oshawa, Ontario. After high school, Wintley enrolled at Oakwood University, a historically black college in Huntsville, Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology. He is married to Linda Galloway, whom he met at Oakwood, and they have three sons: Wintley II, Winston Adriel, and Wade Alexander.
Pastor Phipps obtained a Master of Divinity from Andrews University, a Seventh-day Adventist seminary in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He served as pastor at the Capitol Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church in Washington, D.C., and currently leads the Palm Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church in Florida.
He has performed for U.S. presidents including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton at the 1994 National Prayer Breakfast, as well as George W. Bush and Barack Obama at multiple National Prayer Breakfasts and Obama's 2013 Inaugural Prayer Service. His performances also include the 1984 and 1988 Democratic National Conventions, Rosa Parks' 77th Birthday gala at the Kennedy Center, events honoring Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and for former South African President Nelson Mandela.
Wintley Phipps has appeared on numerous programs such as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. television special, Dr. Robert Schuller's Hour of Power Telecast, Billy Graham Crusades, and has performed at the Vatican. He was the guest soloist at Diana Ross's wedding in Switzerland and has appeared on Saturday Night Live, Soul Train, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the 2013 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.
His voice can be heard on the Breathe Bible project. On July 27, 2020, he delivered a moving rendition of "Amazing Grace" as Rep. John Lewis lay in state at the U.S. Capitol, and he sang "How Great Thou Art" at Colin Powell's funeral on November 5, 2021.
Beyond his accomplishments as a singer-songwriter, Wintley Phipps has demonstrated a strong passion for acting and producing, showcasing his talents as a storyteller and excelling in all facets of the creative process.
