Biografia
Born in 1964 in Newfoundland, Canada, Bruce developed a fascination with animation during his childhood. As a teenager, he began creating short films and Super-8 projects with friends, often experimenting with animations featuring toy battles that ended in flames. His passion for this visual art form led him to enroll in Super-8 film courses at his local college. There, Bruce founded a film club with like-minded peers, which expanded into a larger network of hobby filmmakers and self-proclaimed geeks. They acquired the latest technical equipment and film gear, and frequently watched National Film Board (NFB) films on their 16mm projectors, fully immersing themselves in their love of cinema.
Bruce pursued various artistic interests, studying Music Performance at the University of Toronto in 1985 and earning a Bachelor of Arts in Literary Studies by 1990. After exploring different fields, he realized his true passion was animation. This insight led to an apprenticeship with Belgian animator Dirk van de Vondel in Barcelona, where Bruce honed his animation and design skills within the rich, multilingual European tradition of the time.
In 1991, Bruce co-founded Cuppa Coffee, which remains one of Canada’s largest animation studios today. After five successful years building the company, he sought change and established Tricky Pictures within Chicago's Backyard Productions in 1995. This venture also flourished, demonstrating Bruce's talent for launching and nurturing thriving production companies. However, the Pacific coast called him back, and in 2000 he returned to Canada, settling in Vancouver to found Global Mechanic. He continues to lead this growing production company, which creates films, television shows, commercials, titles, and more recently has expanded into digital and product design through Global Mechanic Labs.
An experimental artist, Bruce constantly pushes conventional boundaries to explore new techniques and produce stunning work with global appeal. While he favors stop motion combined with hand painting and drawing, he works across all media. His style often leans towards abstract, interpretive movement, heavily influenced by music. The movement in his work is closely connected and synchronized with sound, whether complementing or analyzing it.
Bruce has directed over 500 commercials alongside his passion for animated filmmaking. Among his most notable commercial projects are numerous Coca-Cola campaigns for international audiences. These projects, supported by generous budgets, allowed considerable creative freedom. Bruce and his team collaborated with artists worldwide, resulting in one commercial that became the most viewed advertisement in South African history.
