Danny Lee, born in Los Angeles to Korean immigrant parents and immersed in music, skateboarding, and graffiti from a young age, is an Emmy-winning director, writer, and producer. He directed the acclaimed film Who is Stan Smith?, which enjoyed a wide theatrical release and is available for streaming on Hulu. Lee’s directorial debut, Rock Fresh, is an intimate documentary about graffiti artists transitioning into commercial art; it was highlighted by Variety as a standout at AFI Fest before premiering on Showtime.
In scripted projects, Lee is developing Ghosts of Chinatown, a crime thriller inspired by China Mac’s turbulent upbringing in the violent Chinese street gang scene of 1990s New York City, featuring Dallas Liu, Ben Wang, and Izaac Wang. He is also working on a feature film starring Randall Park for Universal. Previously, Lee directed the Lionsgate feature Public Disturbance, starring Mike Tyson and Bobby Lee, and created, wrote, and directed The Clinic for Hulu.
His documentary credits include 30 for 30: Friedman’s Shoes (ESPN), The Express Way starring Dule Hill (PBS), Defining Moments (Hulu), After The Raves (Red Bull/Netflix), and Road to Brooklyn, an all-access series about the Nets’ relocation to Brooklyn, executive produced by Jay-Z. He is currently directing a feature documentary on Avril Lavigne. Lee won the Korean Film Council Filmmakers Lab for his feature script Winter War and serves as an envoy for the American Film Showcase, the U.S. State Department’s cultural diplomacy program.
