Biografia
Sergio Basso began his career as a theatre director with the Teatraz Drama Company before transitioning to the film industry. He served as assistant director to Gianni Amelio on his final production in China, "The Missing Star." Basso has directed numerous documentaries and one feature film. His work has been selected for and awarded at many prestigious international festivals specializing in documentary, animation, and short films, including Locarno, Nyon, Annecy, Turin, and Moscow. He graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, Direction Department (2006), and from Jurij Alschitz and the GITIS Theatre School in Moscow (2002). He also lived in China while studying Oriental Art and earned degrees from Venice University, Oriental Languages Department (1999), and Milan University in Classics (2011). A member of the European Documentary Network, he has taught art-history documentary at the Palermo branch of Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and conducted documentary filmmaking workshops internationally, such as at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Basso was a recipient of the 2009 Solinas Prize for Documentary for the Large Screen and the Movin'Up Scholarship for Young Italian Artists. He has collaborated with RAI & RAICinema, Telecom Italy, Save the Children, Il Corriere della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore publishing house, Skira publishing house, the MAXXI Museum in Rome, and the Istituto dei Beni Culturali in Emilia Romagna. More recently, he has focused on developing cross-media platforms for Il Corriere della Sera and exploring the role of animation in documentary filmmaking, winning an award at the Annecy International Film Festival. His first feature film, "Elementary Love," a children’s movie, was released in 2014 across Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and Canada. It was selected for the Moscow Film Festival and the Giffoni Film Festival. A novel of the same name was published by Salani Publishing House. In 2014, he directed a documentary on the Han dynasty in Beijing for CCTV, the Chinese national television channel, targeting a Chinese audience and produced in Chinese. He has also directed several children’s cartoons.
