Biografia
George A. Johnson is a celebrated writer, director, and producer, renowned for works such as Pursuit of Freedom (2022), Thy Neighbor (2018), and Homeless for the Holidays (2009).
Johnson’s passion for filmmaking started early. At just 3 years old, he crafted stories using toy action figures, acting them out by arranging characters around the room. Instead of joining in, his childhood friends often preferred to watch the unfolding narratives.
By age 7, Johnson had bought his first 8mm film camera at a yard sale, beginning to write scripts, produce short films, and experiment with in-camera effects. Due to financial constraints, he couldn't afford film, so his stories were never recorded. He would wind the camera and listen to its buzz while directing choreographed scenes with friends and his younger brother, Ben Johnson, who later starred in Johnson’s debut feature, Dreamer: The Movie (2004).
At 13, Johnson saved enough from delivering newspapers over three years to purchase his first video camera. He continued creating short films throughout high school, completing his first feature-length screenplay by age 17.
After graduating in 1993, Johnson started working in television and video production, enrolling at the Hollywood Scriptwriting Institute where he honed his skills as a writer, director, producer, and visual effects artist.
Over his career, Johnson has written, directed, and produced more than 11,000 regional, national, and international TV programs, commercials, music videos, sports videos, and short films. He also founded GoStream Sports, one of the most popular high school sports channels on YouTube.
In 2000, he launched his first feature-length film, Dreamer: The Movie (2004), created with basic consumer video equipment. The experimental project aimed to demonstrate that anyone with a video camera, computer, and simple editing software could share their voice globally—before YouTube became a household name.
Dreamer: The Movie premiered in select theaters across Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa, drawing over 600 attendees at its world premiere in Ionia, MI, on New Year’s Eve 2004. Every venue extended its screenings by at least a week. The film received awards at film festivals in the U.S. and Scotland, earned positive reviews from American and Canadian critics, and was acquired for worldwide distribution by Illuminare Entertainment in June 2005.
Following Dreamer, which he considered a "hobby project," Johnson returned to his role as Production Manager at a Northern Ohio television station.
In 2009, he wrote, produced, and directed his second feature, Homeless for the Holidays.
Johnson earned his first NATAS LGL Emmy® Award in 2018 for directing the music video "Haunted" by legendary Canadian rock band The Guess Who.
Together with his wife, Kary Johnson, he co-produced the award-winning thriller Thy Neighbor, which he wrote and directed, released in 2018. The couple began developing their fifth feature film, Pursuit of Freedom, in 2019, which premiered in 2022.
In 2024, Johnson released his sixth feature film, Carol, a Christmas-themed musical, which debuted theatrically and is now available on multiple streaming platforms.
