He has earned 15 Emmy Awards for his work on the "Fight Back!" series, documentaries, and news programs. His consumer reporting has been recognized with over 400 awards from government bodies, industry groups, and citizen organizations.
"Fight Back!" aired in syndication for eighteen seasons, making it one of the longest-running shows of any genre.
Throughout his career, David has reported on-air for NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNBC, gaining praise for his fearless reporting. In 1963, he launched NBC’s first Saigon News Bureau and served as a correspondent and cameraman during the Vietnam War.
In 1971, he risked his life delivering the only live television coverage of the Los Angeles earthquake during a worldwide broadcast from NBC’s Burbank studio parking lot.
In 1989, during a live news broadcast on KNBC, he was held hostage by a gun-wielding mental patient. The incident was broadcast internationally, and the "gun" was later revealed to be a toy. David used this experience to spearhead a global campaign advocating for the marking of toy and replica weapons to prevent confusion with real firearms.
David appeared on the "Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" over forty times, inspiring the beloved character "David Howitzer." He was a guest correspondent on "The Today Show" for eight years and featured on numerous other talk, news, and variety shows including "Oprah Winfrey," "Late Show with David Letterman," "The Jay Leno Show," and "20/20."
Beyond television, David has penned syndicated newspaper columns and authored eight best-selling books. His radio segments aired on Jones Radio Network, and his long-form show, "Fight Back! Talk Back!" ran on Talk Radio Network from 2001 to 2005. He regularly contributes to "The Costco Connection" magazine, reaching over seven million readers worldwide.
