John Frey has spent over 25 years working internationally as an actor, screenwriter, and teacher across theater, film, and television.
His screenwriting work includes "Cabaret Maxime" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), which premiered in February 2020 at the Metrograph Theater in NYC and received the Best Film Award and a Best Screenplay nomination from the Portuguese Society of Authors in 2019; "Operação Outono" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), awarded Best Adapted Screenplay by the Academy of Portuguese Cinema in 2013; "The Lovebirds" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), winner of Best Screenplay at the Festival de Cine de Ourense, Spain, in 2009; and "The Collection" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), released in New York City in 2005.
His film acting credits include "The Hungry Ghosts" (dir. Michael Imperioli), "On the Run" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), "The Collection" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), and "15 Months in May" (dir. Anja Murmann) in the USA; "Call Girl" (dir. António-Pedro Vasconcelos), "Em Câmara Lenta" (dir. Fernando Lopes), "The Lovebirds" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), "Operação Outono" (dir. Bruno de Almeida), "A Palestra" (dir. Bruno de Almeida, produced by Guimarães European Capital of Culture), and "Cabaret Maxime" (dir. Bruno de Almeida) in Portugal; "The Wake" (dir. In 2009, he founded the John Frey Studio for Actors in Lisbon, Portugal, specializing in the Meisner Technique. He also served as artistic director of the Below The Belt Theatre Company in Lisbon, where he directed acclaimed productions of "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea" and "The MotherF**ker with the Hat." His directorial work includes staged readings like Denis Johnson's "Love's Debris," presented in collaboration with the Disquiet International Literary Program. In New York City, Frey directed "Summer and Smoke," "Talk to Me Like the Rain," and "Let Me Listen and Call it Clover" on Theater Row. Additionally, he has taught acting at the William Esper Studio in NYC.
