Boztepe was born in Eskisehir, Turkey, as the second of six siblings. When he was four, his family, originally from Baglica, Emirdag, relocated to Germany. Boztepe described his early years in Germany as challenging due to his Turkish background—he frequently faced racial slurs and verbal abuse, which often escalated to physical attacks. Martial arts became a necessity, and his father encouraged him to start training. Boztepe recalled, "Germany was not a safe place for a young Turk during those times of rising racism and Neo-Nazi activity." He reported being involved in over 300 street fights during this period, though he maintained he never initiated any of them.
At 14, in 1976, Boztepe began training in various martial arts such as judo, Shotokan karate, wrestling, Muay Thai, and traditional boxing. He also competed as an amateur boxer in 16 bouts. In 1980, after witnessing a demonstration by Keith R. Kernspecht in Kiel, Germany, Boztepe developed an interest in Wing Chun, which felt instinctive to him. He also started training in Latosa-Escrima, which Kernspecht's German Wing Tsun Organization incorporated into its curriculum in 1982.
In 1986, Boztepe's match against Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu master William Cheung at a seminar in Germany sparked controversy within the Wing Chun community. Following financial disputes with his master Kernspecht, Boztepe sought instruction from Kernspecht's teacher, Leung Ting, taking private lessons until another financial disagreement led him to leave the Wing Tsun organization. Subsequently, Boztepe established his own school, the Emin Boztepe Martial Arts System.
