David is one of the UK’s most prolific and esteemed directors, with extensive experience in both television and feature films.
He received BAFTA awards for the six-part series Takin’ Over The Asylum, which he commissioned and which featured David Tennant’s first leading role, as well as for The Street, starring Timothy Spall. His work has earned numerous BAFTA, RTS, and International Emmy wins and nominations, along with recognition across Europe. Notable projects include Donovan Quick, starring Colin Firth, and Common, featuring Sir Michael Gambon. Under his direction, actors such as Olivia Colman, Jim Broadbent, Bob Hoskins, and Christopher Eccleston have received Best Actor nominations.
David has collaborated with some of the most renowned figures in British and international film and television, including John Hurt, David Soul, Mark Strong, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Gemma Arterton, Eddie Redmayne, Steve Coogan, and Tim Roth.
He maintained a long and fruitful partnership with UK writer Jimmy McGovern, beginning with the initial series of The Lakes in 1997 and culminating with the BAFTA-nominated TV movie Care in 2018.
In 2021, David produced Crime, a six-part series by Irvine Welsh starring Dougray Scott, whose performance won an International Emmy; David also directed three episodes. Early in 2022, his series Four Lives, centered on the Grindr killer Stephen Port and starring Stephen Merchant, aired on the BBC to widespread critical acclaim.
Currently in development, David is collaborating with Tariq Ali on an adaptation of Ali’s acclaimed novel Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree. Other upcoming projects include Storm Witch, a story about the pursuit and persecution of a suspected witch in 17th century Scotland; The Cairn, reigniting David’s longstanding collaboration with Donna Franceschild, which explores a woman confronting a dark and complex past; and The Gospel According to Billy McGee by Don McPherson, about two teenagers whose fight for a better world turns into a struggle for survival.
