Nicholas Papademetriou was born in Sydney to Cypriot immigrant parents who arrived in 1948. From an early age, he aspired to become an actor. He attended Canterbury Boys High School, one of Sydney's top schools, and graduated from the renowned Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 1984, although his first professional theatre role came in 1973. Since graduating from WAAPA, he has built an extensive career in film, television, and theatre, working as an actor, director, and producer. His theatre credits include collaborations with all major Australian companies, such as the Sydney Theatre Company and Melbourne Theatre Company. He has also performed internationally in New York, Edinburgh, London, and Cyprus. Nicholas was among only six Australian actors selected to collaborate with acclaimed director Mike Leigh on the theatre project Greek Tragedy, which toured Sydney, London, and Edinburgh. His one-man show, SNAG, enjoyed sold-out seasons in Sydney, New York, and Edinburgh, earning nominations for Best Solo Performance in both New York and Edinburgh. In film, he is noted for roles in Death in Brunswick (alongside Sam Neill), Past Midnight (with Maeve Dermody), Sparks (an AFI award winner), The Veiled, and the short film Swinger, which has been featured in numerous international film festivals, winning awards at the Chicago Greek Film Festival and Open Fields Film Festival. On television, he has made guest appearances on many long-running Australian series, starred as the lead in the eight-part ABC series Stringer, been a regular cast member in both seasons of Grass Roots, and held principal roles in Cyclone Tracy and Stark. His recent theatre work includes playing George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and the lead in The Caretaker. In film, he portrayed Severo in the short film Dead Not Dying, for which he won Best Supporting Actor at the Melbourne City Independent Film Awards in February 2018.
