Stephen Scott Scarpulla is an American director, producer, and actor.
He began his professional acting career at age 8 and joined SAG, AEA, and AFTRA within six months. On Broadway, Stephen portrayed "Gavroche" in "Les Misérables" at the Imperial Theatre for over two years, directed by Trevor Nunn and Jason Moore. He played "Clarence" and "Newsboy" in the Broadway revival of "Gypsy," directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes and starring Bernadette Peters, throughout its run at the Shubert Theater. Additionally, he appeared as "Travis" and "Maverick" in the Broadway revival of "Oklahoma," directed by Trevor Nunn and starring Patrick Wilson at the Gershwin Theatre. Stephen also took on the role of "Young Scrooge" in the Madison Square Garden production of "A Christmas Carol," alongside Roger Daltrey as "Scrooge."
He received critical acclaim from the New York Times, Variety, and Hollywood Reporter for his role as "Bert" in "Landscape of the Body," written by John Guare and directed by Tony nominee Michael Greif at the Signature Theatre, performing opposite Lili Taylor, Paul Sparks, and Bernard White.
Stephen has appeared in over 30 commercials, including the BMW i3 electric car commercial that debuted during the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
He graduated as valedictorian from The Professional Performing Arts High School (PPAS) in New York City, where he completed both middle and high school.
Stephen earned a BFA in Film & TV Production with high honors from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, concentrating on directing and minoring in producing. He also participated in master classes at FAMU (Film & TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts) in Prague.
While at NYU, Stephen wrote and directed several award-winning short films, including "Reaction," filmed in the Czech Republic and premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival. His thesis film, "How It Is," was NYU's sole nominee for the Princess Grace Award and received the Malcolm Ross Memorial Film Production Award.
He has produced and directed award-winning feature films such as A New High, which profiles homeless mountain climbers in Washington State and is distributed by The Orchard. His work was selected by the U.S. State Department to represent the United States in the American Film Showcase.
Stephen is the co-founder of Strange Animal, a development and production company based in New York and Los Angeles.
