Born and raised on a Michigan farm in 1890, Irish-American character actor Harry Shannon was well-suited to become a regular in westerns. He began his career touring with repertory and stock companies, honing his musical talents in tent shows, burlesque theaters, and lively Broadway productions like "Oh, Kay!" (1926), "Hold Everything" (1928), "Simple Simon" (1931), and "Pardon My English" (1933). As a member of Joseph Schildkraut's Hollywood Theater Guild, Shannon transitioned to film with the arrival of sound, initially appearing in comedy shorts alongside stars such as Bert Lahr, Shemp Howard, and Leon Errol. By the 1940s, he had established himself in feature films, often playing reliable supporting roles, frequently portraying law-abiding sheriffs or wholesome fathers in westerns. In lighter fare, he appeared as affable Irish policemen or bartenders. He left a subtle but memorable mark as Kane's alcoholic father in the classic Citizen Kane (1941), and his final role was as the grandfather in the musical Gypsy (1962). Between these, he had small roles in notable films like The Fighting Sullivans (1944), The Jolson Story (1946), High Noon (1952), Touch of Evil (1958), and The Buccaneer (1958). In the 1950s, his rugged persona was frequently featured on TV westerns such as Cheyenne (1955), Have Gun – Will Travel (1957), Rawhide (1959), and Gunsmoke (1955). Shannon passed away in 1964 at the age of 74.
