Robin Sky Bicknell is an acclaimed documentary director, producer, and writer, recognized with multiple awards. She currently resides in Toronto, Canada, with family roots in Louisiana and Indiana, USA. Bicknell specializes in high-end history, pop culture, intimate access, and human stories. She is renowned for her skill in connecting with interview subjects and for crafting films and series that are both authentic and cinematic.
Her work has been featured by leading broadcasters including BBC, Channel 4, A&E, History, PBS, CBC, Discovery Channel, ARTÉ, ZDF, Science Channel, Superchannel, MTV, Channel 5, TLC, Discovery Health, Discovery ID, Canal-Vie, Discovery Europe, Slice Network, W Network, Smithsonian Channel, CTV, and Global Television.
Recently, Bicknell wrote and directed the feature film Walking with Ancients (Ice Age America) for Discovery, ARTÉ, and CBC’s The Nature of Things. The film highlights groundbreaking archaeological findings that extend the timeline of human arrival in the Americas by 15,000 years. It is currently nominated for Best Non-Fiction Science and Technology Documentary at the 2024 Realscreen Awards.
During the pandemic, she directed The Machine That Feels, which has earned multiple nominations, including Best Science Documentary at Realscreen 2023. This film examines how AI technology is advancing toward human-like traits such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and creativity.
Bicknell also directed Ice Bridge, which won Best History Documentary at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. The documentary follows a secret archaeological excavation revealing the story of ancient hunters who crossed an ice-covered Atlantic Ocean 20,000 years ago. Additionally, she recently co-directed D-Day in 14 Stories, a feature film focusing on 14 of the last surviving witnesses and combatants of D-Day. In 2018, she directed The Genetic Revolution, a pop-science film about the controversial gene-editing technology CRISPR, which received a nomination for Best Science and Technology Film at the 2019 Banff Television Awards as well as three Canadian Screen Award nominations.
