John Paul Ruttan was born on May 12, 2001. He is a teenage actor recognized for his roles in This Means War (2012), RoboCop (2014), Shelby (2014), and Against the Wild 2: Survive the Serengeti (2016).
His passion for acting began after watching 1980s classics like The Goonies, Home Alone, and The Karate Kid. At age six, he landed his first acting job in a Glad garbage bag commercial and gradually took on roles in television and movies of the week. By age eight, he made his feature film debut in Defendor (2009) alongside Woody Harrelson.
John Paul has had the opportunity to work with some of Hollywood’s finest. He portrayed Tom Hardy’s son in This Means War (2012), co-starring Reese Witherspoon; appeared with Gillian Anderson in I’ll Follow You Down (2013); and played RoboCop’s son in RoboCop (2014) with Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton. He advanced to leading roles, starring in Shelby (2014) with Chevy Chase, earning award nominations and wins in the US and Canada. In 2015, he traveled to Africa to film Against the Wild 2: Survive the Serengeti (2016) alongside Ella Ballentine and Jeri Ryan, depicting siblings surviving the African wilderness after a plane crash.
His television appearances include roles on Degrassi, Lost Girl, The Doodlebops, The L.A. Complex, Rick Mercer Report, CBC Kids, Backpackers, The Listener, CBC Airfarce New Year’s Eve, recurring parts on Saving Hope, and portraying Young William Murdoch on Murdoch Mysteries.
From his first experience on set, John Paul developed a passion for cameras and filmmaking. In his free time, he has participated in film and photography programs and, in 2015, auditioned for the Film Screen Arts high school program.
