Actor and musician Aalok Mehta was born in Edison, NJ, and spent most of his childhood in Cherry Hill, NJ. He is fluent in Gujarati and conversational in Hindi. During high school, he earned first-team all-state honors in tennis and continued playing the sport at the collegiate level. Aalok began his artistic journey as a musician, leading bands as a singer and songwriter. He also studied Indian Classical Music on the sitar under Pandit Nayan Ghosh at the esteemed Sangit Mahabharati in Mumbai, India. His debut film, American Chai, which he scored and starred in as the lead, won Audience Awards at both the Slamdance and GenArt Film Festivals. He originated the role of Salim in the original Broadway cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber and AR Rahman's Bombay Dreams. Over 25 years, Aalok has built a diverse career as an interdisciplinary artist across film, television, theater, voice-over work, composition, sound design, and producing. His acting credits include appearances on Law & Order SVU, Bones, The New Adventures of Old Christine, and recurring roles on Joey, NCIS: Los Angeles, Happy Endings, 30 Rock, and Rules of Engagement. Currently, he is a series regular on the internationally acclaimed Amazon series The Chosen, portraying the character Barnaby. Aalok also appears in the feature film Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks on Amazon Prime, Rebecca Miller's She Came To Me—which premiered at Berlinale and stars Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, and Anne Hathaway—and the Netflix Happy Madison production Kinda Pregnant, featuring Amy Schumer.
