Charles Hamilton Eglee was raised in North Haven, Connecticut, and Eastham, Massachusetts. He graduated cum laude from Williston Academy and earned a B.A. in English from Yale University. After briefly teaching film history at Yale, Eglee moved to California to work for Roger Corman, where he held various production roles and met production designer James Cameron. Together with Cameron, he wrote Piranha II: The Spawning under the pseudonym H.A. Milton. He later wrote and produced the cult canuxploitation film Deadly Eyes.
In 1984, Eglee transitioned to television, joining the writing staff of St. Elsewhere as a story editor for two seasons. He then became a writer and supervising producer on the ABC series Moonlighting. At 20th Century Fox Television, he co-wrote and executive produced the one-hour pilot Rockenwagner. In 1991, Eglee joined Steven Bochco Productions, writing and co-executive producing the ABC series Civil Wars, while also contributing scripts to L.A. Law.
In 1993, Eglee co-created and executive-produced the short-lived ABC series The Byrds of Paradise, featuring Timothy Busfield, Seth Green, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Afterward, he joined NYPD Blue in its second season as a writer and co-executive producer. In 1995, he co-created Murder One with Steven Bochco, serving as executive producer and showrunner. Continuing his collaboration with Bochco, Eglee co-created and executive-produced Total Security for ABC, starring James Belushi and James Remar.
Eglee reunited with James Cameron in 2000 to co-create Dark Angel, a futuristic dystopian drama starring Jessica Alba. In 2003, he became an executive producer on the FX police drama The Shield. In 2007, Eglee joined Showtime’s Dexter as head writer and executive producer for seasons three and four, both earning Emmy nominations for Best Dramatic Series. In 2010, he served as writer and executive producer on AMC’s adaptation of The Walking Dead. Currently, Eglee is the showrunner and executive producer of the Netflix original series Hemlock Grove.
Among "The 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time," selected by the Writers Guild of America, Eglee has contributed to the writing staff of six. Nicknamed "Chic" since birth by his parents, he prefers "Carlitos," though few use that name.
