Sergey Obraztsov was a Soviet actor, puppet theater director, publicist, and writer.
Born in Moscow, his father, Vladimir Nikolaevich Obraztsov, was an academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1939), a renowned scientist specializing in railway transport, with one of Moscow's main streets named after him. His mother, Anna von Rehbinder, was a teacher.
In 1918, Sergey Obraztsov enrolled at the Higher Art and Theater Workshops, later joining the Music Studio of the Moscow Art Theater. From 1922, as an actor at Moscow Art Theater-2, he honed his skills in acting and directing alongside Ivan Bersenev, Sofiya Giatsintova, and Serafima Birman. By the mid-1930s, he gained recognition as a popular artist and pioneer of the parody genre "romances with dolls."
In 1931, Obraztsov founded a unique puppet theater, serving as its director for over sixty years. He significantly contributed to the development of puppet theater theory and methodology, defined its genre characteristics, invented new puppet systems, and mentored multiple generations of talented actors, directors, stage designers, artists, and playwrights. His protégés now work in hundreds of theaters across dozens of countries worldwide.
Beginning in 1956, he expanded into cinema as a screenwriter and director, creating documentary monologues. That same year, at the Soyuzmultfilm studio, he collaborated with Georgi Natanson to produce the full-length puppet animation Nebesnoe sozdanie (1956).
