Biografia
Nick Gaglia is a filmmaker whose passion for storytelling goes beyond entertainment, serving as a catalyst for social change and human connection. His filmmaking journey is deeply personal, shaped by his own challenging experiences. His debut feature, "Over the GW," explores his two-and-a-half-year ordeal in an abusive, cult-like drug rehabilitation center during his youth.
Premiering at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival, "Over the GW" broke new ground by securing a distribution deal immediately after its first screening—an unprecedented achievement for an under-the-radar narrative feature at the festival. The film received critical acclaim nationwide during its theatrical and Netflix release, amplifying Gaglia’s voice in exposing abuse and deception in teen rehabilitation programs. The New York Times praised "Over the GW" as a lasting contribution to the rehab drama genre.
Gaglia continued his social advocacy with the 2009 film "Aaron Bacon," which highlights the tragic story of a troubled teenager abused in a wilderness drug-treatment facility. The film debuted at the Shanghai International Film Festival, attracting international attention and solidifying Gaglia’s reputation as a filmmaker unafraid to address difficult realities.
Beyond feature films, Gaglia has demonstrated his directorial skills in music videos and commercials, bringing his unique style to short-form storytelling. He developed his expertise in video production at Google, combining technical skill with creative vision.
Offscreen, Gaglia is an active advocate against abuse in adolescent treatment programs. His outreach spans Capitol Hill and media appearances on shows like Dr. Phil and Fox News, engaging diverse audiences and fostering dialogue that drives change.
In recognition of his efforts, Gaglia received two humanitarian awards in 2013 from the Survivors of Institutional Abuse organization, honoring his work in raising awareness through film. His 2014 film, "Altered States of Plaine," demonstrated his versatility, filming across four countries and earning acclaim at international festivals while reaching global audiences through television broadcasts.
In addition to filmmaking, Gaglia has shared his knowledge worldwide by teaching acting workshops and lecturing on filmmaking and social activism at prestigious institutions such as NYU, nurturing future storytellers. His dedication to empowering voices extends globally; in Mombasa, Kenya, he volunteered and mentored marginalized youth, teaching them how to use cinema to express themselves.
In 2024, Gaglia released "PinkCity: A Psychedelic Meditation," a film weaving a story of love, loss, and LSD set against the vibrant backdrop of India. He also took on the lead role, expanding his artistic range. As he continues to create stories that resonate on both personal and societal levels, Gaglia’s filmmaking journey exemplifies the transformative power of storytelling in deepening our understanding of humanity.
