Jane Velez-Mitchell is the founder and managing editor of UnChainedTV, a free streaming television network accessible via an app on iPhone, Android devices, Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, and on LG and Samsung Smart TVs. It can also be watched on the network’s hub at unchainedtv. UnChainedTV features hundreds of free documentaries, cooking shows, news updates, talk shows, and music videos, all centered on promoting a compassionate plant-based lifestyle aimed at addressing the climate crisis, improving human health, reducing global hunger, and alleviating animal suffering. She has received four Genesis Awards and commendations from the Humane Society of the United States for her animal-related reporting. In 2010, VegNews named her Media Maven of the Year. Mercy for Animals honored her with their Compassionate Leadership Award in 2013. The Animal Legal Defense Fund recognized her efforts against animal abuse in 2014, and she was awarded the Nanci Alexander Award at PETA’s 35th anniversary in 2015.
For six years, she hosted her own show on HLN/CNN Headline News. Before that, she reported for the nationally syndicated Warner Brothers/Telepictures program Celebrity Justice.
Earlier in her career, Velez-Mitchell worked as a news anchor and reporter at KCAL-TV in Los Angeles and WCBS-TV in New York. She has earned both a Los Angeles Emmy and a New York Emmy for her reporting. A graduate of New York University, she began her journalism career with reporting roles in Ft. Myers, Florida; Minneapolis; and Philadelphia.
Velez-Mitchell is the author of four books. Her 2014 nonfiction New York Times bestseller, Exposed: The Secret Life of Jodi Arias, provides an in-depth psychological analysis of a sensational trial that captivated the American public. Her memoir, iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life, is also a New York Times bestseller. Secrets Can Be Murder explores the hidden deceit and secrecy behind tragic events. Addict Nation: An Intervention for America, co-authored with Sandra Mohr, examines the culture of addiction and overconsumption in society.
She directed and produced the documentary Anita Velez: Dancing Through Life, which won a Gracie Award in 2001. In 2019, she produced the award-winning documentary Countdown to Year Zero, available on Amazon Prime and UnChainedTV. Through her nonprofit and in partnership with Inspired, she co-executive produces New Day New Chef, a vegan cooking series that has won two Taste Awards—regarded as the Oscars of food—and streams on Amazon Prime, UnChainedTV, and public television stations nationwide. She resides in Los Angeles with her three companion animals.
