Standing tall at 6'3" and sharing the amiable handsomeness of his actor father, Joel McCrea, Jody was born Joel Dee McCrea on September 6, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, closely resembling his well-known namesake. The eldest of three siblings, his mother was actress Frances Dee, and his younger brothers are David McCrea and Peter McCrea. Jody showed little interest in the entertainment industry until his early twenties when he began taking minor film roles. He made his uncredited debut in Lucy Gallant (1955) and had the chance to work alongside his father in The First Texan (1956) and Trooper Hook (1957). He advanced to co-star in the short-lived TV western Wichita Town (1959), which also featured his father.
Following that, he appeared in various western and action films such as Lafayette Escadrille (1958), All Hands on Deck (1961), The Broken Land (1962), and Young Guns of Texas (1962). However, he is best remembered for his recurring comedic role as the simple-minded, easygoing character "Deadhead" (later called "Bonehead") in several lighthearted "Beach Party" movies starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, released by American International Pictures between 1963 and 1965. Notably, Jody was one of only two cast members, along with Robert Cummings, who could genuinely surf.
Jody also made TV appearances over the years, maintaining a friendly and appealing persona. Although he established a career in the industry, McCrea struggled to step out of his father's shadow, particularly in western dramas, but comedy offered him a distinctive path. Despite this, after occasionally performing in community theater for several years, McCrea chose to retire from acting entirely in 1970 following his acting and producing work on Cry Blood, Apache (1970). He spent the following decades as a cattle rancher in New Mexico. His wife of 20 years, Dusty McCrea (also known as Dusty Iron Wing), who portrayed the Indian "Dancing Moon" in the film Windwalker (1980), passed away from diabetes complications in 1996. Jody died of cardiac arrest in 2009 at his ranch in Roswell.
