Biografia
James McDougall is a Canadian actor and filmmaker from Cobourg, Ontario. He is the son of Gail McDougall, a prison manager, and John McDougall, an English teacher. From a young age, James was passionate about acting and filmmaking, participating in local plays, school theater, and creating home movies with friends.
He pursued drama at Canterbury Arts High School before studying theater for a year at York University. Returning to Ottawa, James performed in musicals and dramas with ASNY, Orleans Young Players, and GOYA. He later moved to Victoria, B.C., where he appeared in productions with Atomic Vaudeville, Theatre Inconnu, and Langham Court Theatre.
After several years in British Columbia, James returned to Ontario to focus on film and television in Toronto. He developed his on-camera skills by creating projects, training, and working at Armstrong Acting Studios, where he filmed thousands of hours of classes and casting sessions with top Canadian casting directors, gaining deep industry experience and building his on-screen resume.
Notable roles include leading Vincenzo Natali’s segment in the anthology horror film ABCs of Death 2 (2014), portraying Santa Claus in Michael Dowse’s HBO Max film 8-Bit Christmas (2021), and playing the bumbling criminal Hammond in Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s thriller Becky (2020), alongside Kevin James, Lulu Wilson, and Joel McHale.
James has also dedicated over a decade to writing, directing, and producing at Mountain Man Media. The short film Walking Supply (2016), co-written with Derek Barnes, premiered at The Toronto International Short Film Festival and later inspired the feature Whiteout (2023), which James co-wrote and starred in as Henry. This survival thriller, shot during winter, was sold at the Cannes Film Market and secured distribution through Saban Films and Myriad Pictures.
In 2021, James founded Galebreak Studios, a production company committed to creating compelling narrative stories across all genres, including shorts and feature films.
