Julian Farino, born and raised in London and educated at Cambridge University, began his directing career with film documentaries at Granada Television in England. His works include One of the Girls, focusing on drag queens in Manchester, and The Gift, inspired by the renowned Chethams College of Music. They Call Us Nutters offered a fly-on-the-wall look at psychopaths in a maximum security hospital, marking the first time such access was granted. Savage Skies explored Oymyakon in Eastern Siberia, the coldest inhabited place on earth, where temperatures dropped to -55°C.
In 2000, he directed 7 Up 2000, featuring seven-year-olds from across Britain, a project that continued with 14 Up in 2007. Since 1997, he has directed film dramas in the UK, including an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, which won four BAFTAs, including Best Drama. Bob and Rose, a romantic comedy by Queer as Folk writer Russell T Davies, won Best Series at The British Comedy Awards, and Flesh and Blood, starring Christopher Eccleston, received the Prix Europa for Best Film.
He directed the feature film The Last Yellow for BBC Films, starring Samantha Morton, and most recently Byron, also for the BBC, featuring Jonny Lee Miller and Vanessa Redgrave.
Farino moved to America to direct two episodes in the final season of Sex and the City for HBO. In addition to Entourage, he has directed Rome for HBO. He primarily resides in London with his wife, actress Branka Katic, and their two sons, Louis and Joe.
