Though his name might not be widely recognized, Ronan Vibert’s face certainly would be. Known as a sharp character actor, he gained acclaim for his television roles on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Cambridgeshire to artists David Vibert and Dilys (née Jackson), he spent his childhood in Penarth, South Wales, until he was 18. At one point, he was the lead singer in a band. After graduating from RADA in 1985, Vibert moved to London and made his theatrical debut that same year. His stage work included productions such as The Snow Queen, Peer Gynt, Uncle Vanya, and War and Peace, with performances at venues like the Manchester Royal Exchange, the Bristol Old Vic, and the National Theatre.
With striking facial features and a commanding voice, Vibert excelled in intense, dramatic roles, often drawing comparisons to the late Alan Rickman. He was particularly convincing as menacing upper-class villains, including the demonic Mephistopheles in Hex (2004), the crude misogynist Giovanni Sforza in The Borgias (2011), and the ruthless landlord Sir Geoffrey Hawkes in Penny Dreadful (2014). His characters' cruelty frequently led to fitting punishments by story’s end. Vibert once remarked in an interview, "I always like to do projects that are different from the one before. Going from Renaissance Italy to 19th century West Virginia, within a few days, was a wild one," referring to his role as Perry Cline, a secondary antagonist with disturbing tendencies, in Hatfields & McCoys (2012).
Comfortable in period dramas, Vibert portrayed a diverse array of vivid characters, from the timid Wilmot in Jeeves and Wooster (1990) to the formidable 'Iron Duke' Lord Wellington in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015), from Simion the Wise in Dracula Untold (2014) to the doomed politician Ritter Longbane in Carnival Row (2019). After living in London for most of his life, Vibert eventually moved to Florida, where he died at the age of 58 on December 22, 2022, following a brief illness.
