Yumiko Cheng Hei-Yi, born Cheng Lit-King on September 6, 1981, in Shanghai, moved to Hong Kong with her family at age 11 and began singing lessons. At 13, she trained with powerhouse singer Elisa Chan. Around that time, through her father’s connections in film and advertising, she appeared in several movies. She played the daughter of an assassinated court official fleeing from Donnie Yen's eunuch character in Dragon Inn (1992) and reportedly had a minor role in Centre Stage (1992). Yumiko officially entered the entertainment industry after catching the attention of Emperor Entertainment Group executives during the New Talent Competition, signing with the label in 2000. In 2002, she joined two other girls to form the group 3T, which released one album before she left to pursue a solo singing career.
Yumiko released her first EP, 'Yumiko The Debut,' in November 2002. She gained popularity in June 2003 with her second EP, 'Dance Dance Dance.' Five months later, in November 2003, she released her debut album, One2Three. Her second album, 'Perfect Date,' failed to attract significant attention. In August 2005, she released 'Yumiko's Space,' featuring the hit song 'Arabian Market,' marking a successful comeback. In April 2006, she released her fourth album, 'Passion.' The track 'When Rose Encounters Love' reached the top 10 on the Hong Kong charts and was popular in its first week. Her second single, 'Wild Girl,' hit No. 1, solidifying her status as a prominent female singer that year.
