Jennifer Zhang gained recognition in 2021 when "Deadline" featured her ambitious solo project, "Charon," which premiered at the Cannes film market. As an Asian American filmmaker to watch, she received acclaim for this feature, described by Dread Central as a "brutal exploration of isolation and betrayal" that was "dominating the festival circuit." Shortly after, Summerhill Entertainment acquired the film, with a U.S. release scheduled for 2023.
Her career momentum has continued to grow. Her short film "Fetish" won the grand prize at the Micheaux Film Festival, sponsored by Panavision, and became Oscar-qualified following a theatrical run as a top 10 finalist at the Manhattan Short Film Festival. Notably, "Fetish" is the first film addressing race-based fetishism to achieve this honor.
Jennifer’s diverse entertainment career spans 15 years, beginning with viral parody content on early YouTube that led to the production of her debut feature film, "The Evil Inside." She wrote, produced, and co-starred in this independent horror, which won multiple "Best Narrative Feature" and "Best Screenplay" awards at festivals before securing worldwide distribution on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD.
In the upcoming months, Jennifer will return to the festival scene with "Autopilot," a science-fiction thriller short that she wrote and directed. Co-produced with lead actress Gina Su and shot by American Cinematographer Magazine "Rising Star" Daphne Qin Wu, this film aims to enhance Asian female representation in science fiction, both on-screen and behind the camera.
As a writer, Jennifer is a respected story consultant with Hollywood’s Save the Cat! Her screenplays have been optioned by executive producers of Academy Award-nominated films, and several scripts are currently in development with production companies in Los Angeles. Over the next two months, coinciding with the start of her Oscar campaign, Jennifer is set to begin production on a new feature titled "Troubadour," an anthology comprising her recent award-winning short films, and will also begin pre-production on her fourth feature, "Angela.
