Inna Mikhailovna Churikova was born on October 5, 1943, in Belebey, near Ufa, Bashkiria Republic, Russia (then part of the USSR). Her parents came from peasant backgrounds. Her father, Mikhail Kuzmich Churikov, a World War II veteran, worked at the Academy of Agriculture. Her mother, Elisaveta Zakharovna (née Mantrova), held a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Raised in Moscow by her mother, Inna developed an early passion for theatre and attended an acting class at the Stanislavsky Theatre. Between 1960 and 1965, she studied at the Schepkin Theatrical School at the Maly Theatre, graduating as an actress in 1965.
Churikova debuted on the big screen in 1961 with 'Tuchi nad Borskom' and appeared in minor roles in 'Ya shagayu po Moskve' and other films. She gained widespread recognition for her lead role as Tanya Tetkina in _V ogne broda net_ (1968), directed by Gleb Panfilov. Her subsequent performance as Pasha Stroganova, a provincial amateur actress cast as Joan of Arc in 'The Beginning' (1970), is considered one of her finest film roles. Following the success of 'Nachalo', Churikova and her husband, director Gleb Panfilov, aimed to create an epic film about Joan of Arc, though Soviet authorities hindered their efforts. Nevertheless, Churikova's film career thrived; in 1984, she received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for her portrayal of Vera in 'Voenno-polevoy roman', directed by Petr Todorovsky. Her notable roles include Vera in 'God Sobaki' and Asya in 'Ryaba, My Chicken' (1994), among others.
Since 1974, Inna Churikova has been part of the Lenkom Theatre troupe in Moscow, led by director Mark Zakharov. There, she shared the stage with prominent actors such as Nikolay Karachentsov, Gennadi Khazanov, Oleg Yankovskiy, Leonid Bronevoy, Aleksandr Abdulov, Armen Dzhigarkhanian, and Aleksandr Zbruev. Some of her most memorable stage roles include Sara in Anton Chekhov's 'Ivanov' and Arkadina in 'The Seagull'. She also portrayed Ophelia in Shakespeare’s 'Hamlet' and the Commissar in Vishnevsky’s 'Optimisticheskaya tragedia', among others.
Beloved by audiences and praised for her versatility and natural style, Inna Churikova was honored as People's Artist of the USSR in 1991 and People's Artist of Russia. She received the Golden Mask award, the State Prize of Russia (1985), and the Stanislavsky Prize for her contributions to theatre and film. She currently resides in Moscow, Russia.
