Brett Rapkin is an Emmy Award-winning producer, writer, and director, as well as the founder and president of Podium Pictures, a production company specializing in impactful sports films.
Raised in Los Angeles playing competitive baseball, Brett attended the University of Arizona. Soon after graduating, he assembled a small crew and secured access to Cuba, leading to the documentary "Spaceman: A Baseball Odyssey," which premiered at the AFI SilverDocs Festival and was acquired by MLB Network.
In 2003, Brett relocated to New York to be mentored by the principals at Black Canyon Productions, an acclaimed, multiple Peabody and Emmy Award-winning sports film company known for HBO Sports documentaries such as "Curse of the Bambino" and the "When It Was a Game" series.
During this period, he wrote, produced, and directed projects for ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS, HBO, Red Bull, and others.
In 2004, he was hired to document the entire FIS World Cup Ski Racing season in the European Alps, chronicling the championship run of Olympic legend Bode Miller.
Eventually returning to Los Angeles, Brett wrote, produced, and directed his first scripted feature film, "Spaceman," starring Josh Duhamel as eccentric MLB pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee, with Sterling K. Brown also featured. The film was acquired and released worldwide by Amazon and Orion Pictures/MGM.
"Welcome to Dodgertown," narrated by Vin Scully and Larry King, earned a 2016 Emmy for Best Sports Special.
In 2020, HBO Sports acquired and released "The Weight of Gold," a documentary Brett wrote, produced, and directed alongside Olympic champion Michael Phelps. The film explores mental health among Olympic athletes and garnered over 1.5 billion media impressions across outlets including CNN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and The Today Show.
