In 2017, he created, directed, and executive produced the Netflix Original four-part series Fire Chasers, working alongside Executive Producer Leonardo DiCaprio. The series earned an Emmy nomination and received critical acclaim, described as "Stunning & Gripping" by LA Weekly, "Terrifying" by Indiewire, "Stunning" by The Village Voice, "Searing and intense" by The Hollywood Times, "Eloquent...Perversely Beautiful" by the San Francisco Chronicle, and achieved a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Pinder’s debut film, LAND, premiered at the 2010 HotDocs film festival, garnering four and five-star reviews and was described by one publication as "a Joseph Conrad story seen through a Hunter S. Thompson haze."
His second feature documentary, Trouble in the Peace, along with an associated high-concept video game, was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival and had a nationwide theatrical release in 2012.
Jesus Town USA, also directed and produced by Pinder, was commissioned by Sky Atlantic and later acquired by Showtime and Netflix in 2015. Initially released in the UK, it received four stars from The Daily Mail, was named "pick of the week" by The Sunday Times, selected as a "critic’s choice" by The Telegraph, and was called a "factual Napoleon Dynamite" by The Globe and Mail.
Population Zero, a scripted feature film co-directed by and starring Pinder, won the Jury Prize for Best Feature Film at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival and was nominated for Best Picture at the Newport Beach Film Festival, among other accolades. It premiered on HBO in 2016.
Early in his career, in his late teens, Julian worked as a producer and mentee with the renowned Canadian team Sarrazin Couture Entertainment (La Florida), managing projects for Lifetime and CTV. He collaborated closely with filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nick de Pencier (Watermark, Manufactured Landscapes) and actress-director Helen Shaver (The Unit, Law and Order). During this time, he also directed a series of short art-house films set in wartime Kosovo and Bosnia.
Beyond feature films and television, he has created or co-created commercial campaigns such as Ralph Lauren RRL, MTV Rock the Vote spots, and music videos for Grammy-nominated band The Milk Carton Kids featuring actress Amanda Seyfried. More recently, he produced The Raconteurs’ conceptual film with Jack White and Blondie's two comeback videos.
In 2022, partnering with Paramount Studios and The Autry Museum of The American West, Pinder founded the Pioneertown Film Festival, a unique celebration of Western films shot in and around the iconic movie town established by Roy Rogers. The weekend event featured performances by The Dandy Warhols and The Sons of The Pioneers, and premiered the Jason Momoa Western The Last Manhunt. The festival also hosts events with notable actors, writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, and programmers from festivals such as Cannes and Sundance.
Julian resides with his partner, artist Keely King, on their horse ranch near Pioneertown, California. He is currently developing a slate of independent feature films slated for production in Europe in the coming years.
