Mike Lobel is a Canadian picture editor, director, actor, and musician. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he comes from Polish and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage and grew up with two siblings.
From a young age, Lobel showed a passion for music, starting drum lessons at nine. He later attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts, focusing on music and drama. During this period, he formed bands such as "Civilian" and "Boys Who Say No" while also pursuing acting.
Lobel’s acting debut was in the 2003 film Twist, an adaptation of Oliver Twist directed by Jacob Tierney and featuring Nick Stahl. His most recognized role is "Jay Hogart," a manipulative school bully on MTV’s Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001).
In 2009, he appeared in the film Suck as "Sam," the drummer of a rock band plagued by vampires, alongside rock icons Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, and Iggy Pop. His television credits include Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye (2002), The Best Years (2007), and HBO Max’s Detention Adventure (2019). Film appearances include Selling Innocence (2005), Booky Makes Her Mark (2006), and Degrassi Goes Hollywood (2009).
Beyond acting, Lobel co-founded the synth-pop band Future Peers in 2014, touring across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. He began working as a picture editor in 2016, which led to his roles as editor and director on HBO Max’s Detention Adventure. He has also edited and directed numerous music videos and documentaries.
Lobel’s work on Detention Adventure earned him a Canadian Screen Award nomination in 2023.
