His father, Ernst Hinterseer, won the Olympic gold medal in slalom at the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley. Encouraged to take up alpine skiing as a child, Hansi Hinterseer joined the Austrian national team at age 14. He achieved his first World Cup slalom victory during the 1972/73 season in Anchorage, USA. By the age of 18, Hinterseer secured the overall World Cup title. Throughout his career, he claimed six World Cup wins, including the prestigious Hahnenkamm race on the Ganslerhang in 1974.
On January 27, 1974, Hinterseer triumphed in the World Cup slalom in Kitzbühel, Austria. He earned a silver medal at the 1974 World Championships in St. Moritz. On February 25, 1975, he won the giant slalom in Furano, Japan. His final World Cup victory came in a slalom event on December 21, 1975, in Schladming, Austria. Hinterseer retired from professional skiing in the early 1980s. Beginning in 1984, he worked as a presenter for live alpine ski broadcasts on the Austrian broadcaster ORF and frequently appeared on sports programs.
Hinterseer married in 1986 and has two daughters. In 1994, he launched a second career as a folk singer, with productions by Jack White. He also found success as a host of entertainment shows, earning the Golden "Romy" award in 1998. Between 1997 and 2004, he received the Golden Tuning Fork award seven times. He was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in 2001, 2003, and 2006. Additionally, he was honored with the Crown of Folk Music in 1998, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.
In 2009 and 2010, he released the songs "Come with Me!" and "I Just Love You.
