Gene Rayburn was born on December 22, 1917, in Christopher, Illinois. After his father passed away when he was very young, his mother relocated to Chicago, remarried Milan Rubessa, and Gene took his stepfather's surname. Known then as Gene Rubessa, he acted in high school plays and aspired to pursue an acting career. In the 1930s, he moved to New York City, working as a page for NBC and later as an usher for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Prior to World War II, he attended announcers school and collaborated with various radio personalities in New York City. In 1940, he married Helen Tricknor, and they had a daughter named Lynn in 1942. Shortly after, he was called to serve in the U.S. Air Corps during the war. Following the war, Gene worked on the "Rayburn and Finch Show" and later hosted the "Gene Rayburn Show" in the early 1950s. During that decade, Rayburn played a key role in exposing radio corruption by repeatedly playing an older song until it became a hit, demonstrating how record promoters could bribe DJs to boost a song's popularity. His major breakthrough came in the mid-1950s as the announcer on The Tonight Show (1953) with Steve Allen. Rayburn and Allen worked together on The Tonight Show for three years, establishing Rayburn as a household name. In 1955, he hosted his first game show, The Sky's the Limit (1954). He went on to host several other game shows, including The Match Game (1962), Make the Connection (1955), Musical Chairs (1954), Play Your Hunch (1958), Tic Tac Dough (1956), and Dough Re Mi (1958). Rayburn regularly flew by jet from his Massachusetts home to host his shows. He was also active on Broadway, appearing in productions such as "Bye, Bye Birdie," where Charles Nelson Reilly was his understudy. Additionally, he had a minor role in the 1959 film It Happened to Jane.
