Biografia
Nino Surguladze, born in Tbilisi, Georgia, studied at the Tbilisi Conservatory of Music and earned prizes in several prestigious international voice competitions, including the Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulouse, the Francisco Vinas Competition in Barcelona, and the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. She completed her training at the Academy Studio of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, debuting as Cuniza in Verdi's Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio, and performing as Marie in Rossini's Moise et Pharaon under Riccardo Muti during the 2003-04 season opener. Since then, she has appeared in numerous roles at Teatro alla Scala, such as Meg Page in Falstaff (conducted by Muti), Olga in Eugene Onegin (directed by Graham Vick), Idamante in Idomeneo (conducted by Harding), Fedor in Boris Godunov (conducted by Gergiev), Solokha in Tchaikovsky's Cherevichki, Siebel in Faust, and Valencienne in Die Lustige Witwe. Throughout Italy, she has performed as Niklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann in Torino; Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust (conducted by Plasson) at Teatro Regio di Parma; Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Cuniza at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa; as well as Carmen in Bari, Macerata, Bologna, and Naples; and Fenena in Nabucco at the Arena di Verona and Piacenza.
At 22, Ms. Surguladze made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Sonjetka in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Her other roles at the Liceu include Federica in Luisa Miller opposite Samuel Ramey and Maddalena in Rigoletto, a role she has also performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and Teatro Real in Madrid (with Leo Nucci as Rigoletto). In Spain, she gained notable success as Dorabella (opposite Barbara Frittoli) at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. In the UK, she performed Olga and Dorabella in Così fan tutte at the Royal Opera House and Clara in Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery at the Glyndebourne Festival, earning widespread critical acclaim. In Germany, her roles include Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, Niklausse, Carmen, and Idamante in Hamburg, as well as Polinesso and Ariodante in Frankfurt. She debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 2009 as Sinaide in Moise et Pharaon (conducted by Muti), a role she subsequently sang in Rome.
In Tokyo, Ms. Surguladze has performed Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Dorabella, and Carmen; in the USA, she has sung Carmen in San Diego and Olga to great acclaim in Chicago.
She appears in several DVDs, including the film Opera with Plácido Domingo as Maddalena. Additionally, she is an accomplished actress, receiving a special prize at the Geneva Film Festival for her role in the Georgian film Walsi Pechoraze.
Her concert highlights include her debut in Rome (Santa Cecilia) performing Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Dvořák's Requiem in Berlin with the Berlin Philharmonic under Nicola Luisotti, along with gala concerts alongside Bryn Terfel, José Cura, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras. Recently, she portrayed Carmen in Istanbul during a special concert dedicated to Leyla Gencer.
Currently, she stars as Olga in Eugene Onegin at Teatro Regio in Turin, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and directed by Kasper Holten; as Stéphano in Roméo et Juliette at the Arena di Verona; and in Rigoletto at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, conducted by Fabio Luisi.
Upcoming engagements include her debut as Amneris in Aida at Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, Carmen with the Sugi Opera Company in Seoul, and Rigoletto at the Festival Internacional de Música de Bogotá. Ms. Surguladze will also participate in various concerts across Germany.
