Biografia
Known as Tip, he was a humorist and actor. At age 8, he relocated with his family to Madrid. In 1939, he began secondary school but did not complete it. Between 1942 and 1943, he attended the Escuela de Cerámica, studying cabinetmaking, ceramics, and amateur theatre, aiming to enter the Fine Arts School. During this period, he decided to pursue acting. In 1944, he trained at the María Guerrero theatre and debuted in the play 'De lo pintado a lo vivo'. Later, as a professional, he toured Andalusia with the María Noé theatre company.
In 1945, he joined Radio Madrid, debuting on a children's program as the character 'Don Poeto Primavero de Quintillas'. He remained there for 14 years, during which he formed the comic duo 'Tip y Top' with Joaquín Portillo Flores (Joaquín Portillo 'Top'). The duo gained widespread popularity in Spain, performing on radio, theatre, and nightclubs, authoring a book, and starring in three films: Tres eran tres (1954), La fierecilla domada (1955), and Tarde de toros (1956). The partnership ended in 1961.
Tip then pursued a solo career, working on TV with the program 'Las Zapatiestas'. In the early 1960s, he occasionally collaborated with José Luis Coll, eventually forming the comic duo 'Tip y Coll'. From 1967 onward, they appeared together in numerous shows, including the 1972 film La garbanza negra, que en paz descanse..., where their signature attire—Tip in a top hat and Coll in a bowler hat—became iconic. They performed in nightclubs, theatres, and on radio. In early 1969, they hosted the TV program 'Galas del sábado'.
Throughout the early 1970s, they made over 15 films and ran a daily show at the Top-Less nightclub for at least eight years. They also featured on the TV program '625 líneas', directed by José Antonio Plaza, where their sketches often faced censorship. In a 1979 poll by Blanco y Negro magazine, they topped the 'Top humorists of the year' list, ahead of Antonio Mingote and Antonio Fraguas 'Forges'. They continued performing in nightclubs across Madrid and Barcelona.
In the 1980s, Tip joined the radio program 'Protagonistas' on COPE, directed by Luis del Olmo, and later appeared on 'Debate sobre el estado de la nación' on Onda Cero. Alongside other participants from this latter show, he began appearing on the weekly TV program 'Este país necesita un repaso' on Tele 5, directed by José Luis Coll, starting November 3, 1993. In September 1997, he became a collaborator on Onda Cero's 'La brújula', hosted by Concha García Campoy, featuring a segment titled 'Cuentos infantiles para personas de cierta edad'.
After 15 years on air with 'Debate sobre el estado de la nación', Luis del Olmo announced its conclusion in September 1998 due to Tip’s illness—a throat tumor. Among his honors are the Pueblo journal's Popularity Award, the Ondas Award, and a Year's Protagonists Award from Onda Rambla de Barcelona. He received numerous honorary memberships and, on May 13, 1994, was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit at Work.
Tip also authored several books, including 'Cantares del Mío Tip' (1980), 'Santos varones' (1995), and, alongside Coll, 'Tipicoll Spanish'. His television appearances include 'La casa de los Martínez' (1967) and 'El último café'. Notable films in his career include Mónica Stop (1969), De cuerpo presente (1967), Dame un poco de amooor...! (1968), Urtain, el rey de la selva... o así (1970), and El cronicón (1970).
