Joi Johannsson is an acclaimed Nordic actor, born and raised in Iceland. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1994 with a B.A. in Theatre and Cinematic Arts.
Joi began his acting career in 1986 with the international TV mini-series Nonni and Manni. Since then, he has appeared in over 40 international films and TV productions. His most recent work includes Fortitude 2 (UK), where he joined an international cast led by Dennis Quaid. Other significant roles include Clint Eastwood's Flag of Our Fathers (USA) and a lead in Baltasar Kormákur’s The Deep (Iceland), which won ten Edda Awards and received recognition from the Nordic Council, European Film Awards, Göteborg Film Festival, Les Arcs European Film Festival, and Mar del Plata Film Festival. Joi also starred in the Icelandic TV mini-series The Lava Field, played a major role in the Danish film The Shamer's Daughter, and was the lead opposite Franka Potente in the German films Solveig Karlsdottir - The Death in Westfjords and Death of the Elf Woman.
A versatile performer, Joi excels in both comedy and drama. He is highly skilled in languages, speaking fluent German and Scandinavian languages, and has flawless American and British accents. He does not speak Finnish. Joi has appeared in nearly 50 theatre productions in the USA and Iceland, including roles such as Leontes in A Winter’s Tale, Woof in Hair, Ginger in Jerusalem, Stanley in One Man, Two Guvnors, Man 1 in 39 Steps, and Alex in Certified Male. He currently appears in Icelandic Sagas - The Greatest Hits.
Joi has hosted, produced, and written over 200 television episodes and 150 radio shows.
His latest project was a role in the TV series The Mayor (Iceland), which recently completed filming. The series is written by and stars former Reykjavik mayor and comedian Jon Gnarr.
Joi’s upcoming premieres include The Oath by Baltasar Kormákur on September 9th, and the German TV films The Death in Westfjords and Death of the Elf Woman, airing on ARD in October.
In September, Joi will present his film The Death in Westfjords at the Oldenburg Film Festival in Germany.
