Michael Murphy is an accomplished, Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker known for projects that engage , entertain, and inspire through passionate storytelling. His films often spotlight how the musical rhythms and sounds of New Orleans represent some of the most significant and impactful music created in America.
Over his 35 year career he has filmed over 300 live performances with some of the world's most acclaimed artists, including Troy Andrews, Terence Blanchard, Fats Domino, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Rueben Blades, Dave Brubeck Quartet, Jimmy Buffett, Harry Connick Jr, Buddy Guy, Herbie Hancock, Dr. John, BB King, Carol King, The Dave Matthews Band, The Neville Brothers, Keith Richards, Santana, Paul Simon, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Irma Thomas, Wynton Marsalis, Willie Nelson, Allen Toussaint.
His critically acclaimed films have won numerous awards for crafting impactful stories on the musicians and cultural heritage of his hometown of New Orleans. He is known for weaving the personal stories of musicians with a backstory of how the legacy of Jim Crow laws impacted their lives and creative processes. His programs have been distributed internationally by broadcasters & platforms that include Amazon, ABC, Apple TV, CBS, NHK, PBS, RAI, Sony Pictures, Showtime, Turner TV, UMG, ZDF.
