Born in Norwich, Connecticut, Gernhard graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1995 and earned a degree in Communication (Television Production) with a minor in Graphic Design from Southern Connecticut State University in 1999. In 2004, he established Synthetic Cinema International, a production company based in Rocky Hill that has grown into a leading force in made-for-TV movies, collaborating with major networks and studios such as Hallmark, Netflix, Paramount, Disney, Lifetime, and NBCUniversal.
Gernhard's versatility is evident in his varied filmography, which includes suspenseful thrillers like Animal (2014) and Dead Souls (2012), alongside festive hits like The Noel Diary (2022) and A Biltmore Christmas (2023). His productions have not only engaged audiences but also achieved significant success; two of his 2023 films were the highest-rated original TV movies across all cable networks that year. His talent for creating compelling narratives has garnered recognition, including the 2023 Joyce Resnikoff Tourism Award for strengthening Connecticut’s film industry and economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though his work has reached global audiences, with recent projects filmed in locations such as Fiji, Iceland, Finland, and Scotland, Gernhard remains deeply connected to his Connecticut roots. In 2024, he was named Norwich Native Son, highlighting his ongoing bond with his hometown and its influence on his dedication and storytelling.
As Synthetic Cinema International expands, the company has grown its presence to Buffalo, New York, partnering closely with Buffalo FilmWorks, which houses the largest stages outside Manhattan. This collaboration enhances the East Coast production network by providing access to premier facilities as well as local talent and crews. Looking forward, Gernhard is guiding the company toward further international productions, aiming to shoot in exotic locations that add new layers and ambiance to their stories.
Gernhard’s path from an enthusiastic student to a celebrated filmmaker highlights his dedication to storytelling and his significant contributions to the film industry.
