Vladislav Strzhelchik was a Russian actor renowned for his role as Napoleon in Sergey Bondarchuk's epic film War and Peace (1965).
Born Vladislav Ignatyevich Strzhelchik on January 31, 1921, in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), Russia, his father, Ignat Strzhelchik, was a Polish Catholic who, after World War I, was interned in Petrograd and discreetly attended Catholic services in Leningrad. Raised in a culturally rich household, Vladislav developed a love for literature and theatre, dreaming of acting on stage and eventually participating in amateur drama during high school.
In 1937, he was admitted to the Acting Studio of the Bolshoi Drama Theatre in Leningrad, where his teachers included Aleksei Dikij and the renowned Boris Babochkin. Strzhelchik’s entire acting career, from 1938 until his death in 1995, was tied to the Bolshoi Drama Theatre (BDT). His studies and career were interrupted by World War II, during which he served on the front lines during the siege of Leningrad. After the war, he resumed his studies and graduated from the Leningrad BDT Acting Studio in 1947.
Under the direction of Georgi Tovstonogov, who modernized the theatre’s repertoire and raised its artistic standards, Strzhelchik’s talent flourished. He worked with Tovstonogov for nearly 35 years alongside a distinguished ensemble of actors at BDT in Leningrad/St. Petersburg. His stage colleagues included Vasili Sofronov, Vitali Politsejmako, Oleg Basilashvili, Tatyana Doronina, Alisa Freyndlikh, Lyudmila Makarova, Svetlana Kryuchkova, Zinaida Sharko, Natalya Tenyakova, Elena Popova, Valentina Kovel, Mariya Prizvan-Sokolova, Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy, Sergey Yurskiy, Kirill Lavrov, Ivan Palmu, Oleg Borisov, Yefim Kopelyan, Evgeniy Lebedev, Georgiy Shtil, Pavel Pankov, Mikhail Volkov, Leonid Nevedomsky, Vsevolod Kuznetsov, Vadim Medvedev, Yuriy Demich, Gennadiy Bogachyov, Andrey Tolubeev, Nikolay Trofimov, Pavel Luspekayev, and many other notable Russian actors.
Among Strzhelchik’s most celebrated stage roles were Gregory Solomon in "Tsena" (1968), an adaptation of Sholom Aleichem’s work, and Antonio Salieri in the play Amadeus (1982). His performances were praised by critics and audiences alike for their distinctive presence and subtlety. His notable film roles included Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in War and Peace (1965) and General Kovalevsky in the popular TV series Adyutant ego prevoskhoditelstva (1969), among numerous others.
Strzhelchik served as a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography from 1959 to 1968 and taught at the Leningrad Institute of Culture from 1966 to 1990. He received the Vasilyev Brothers State Prize of the Russian Federation for his television work, was honored as People's Artist of the USSR in 1974, and awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor in 1988. Vladislav Strzhelchik passed away from a brain tumor on September 11, 1995, in St. Petersburg and was buried in the Necropolis of The Masters of Art "Literatorskie mostki" at Volkovskoe Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Russia.
