David Green is a British film director, television producer, and media executive.
Born in London, England, to Evelyn Morris and Louis Green, he was educated at Bury Grammar School and Trinity College, Oxford, where he earned a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature. Green began his career at Yorkshire Television, quickly becoming its youngest programme director. He gained experience directing the launch of Emmerdale (60 episodes), followed by 29 one-hour episodes of Whicker's World, a three-part American medical series with Austin Mitchell, two European political documentaries narrated by Robert Kee, and a film about Elvis presented by David Frost.
Green is a prominent figure in both British and American film and television, having worked across nearly every genre. His film directing credits include the award-winning romantic comedy and crime drama Buster, starring Phil Collins and Julie Walters, and the $22 million action-adventure Wings of the Apache, featuring Nicolas Cage, Tommy Lee Jones, and Sean Young (released in the U.S. as Fire Birds by Touchstone). Other feature films he directed include the psychological thriller Breathtaking with Joanne Whalley and Jamie Foreman, and the comedy Car Trouble, starring Julie Walters and Ian Charleson.
In television, Green has directed over 100 dramas and documentaries, such as The Golden Land for BBC1, The Boy in the Bubble for ITV, Wilfred and Eileen and East Lynne for BBC Drama, and the ITV movie 1914 All Out, which won the Public Prize at the Reims Festival of Television. His TV drama work also includes Nobody's House for ITV and The Chinese Detective for BBC1. Additionally, Green was a prominent commercials director with James Garrett & Partners, producing over 50 campaigns, including Peter Ustinov presenting Masterpiece Theatre for Mobil and the award-winning Red Mountain coffee campaign.
In 1992, Green founded September Films, an independent film and television production company with offices in London and Los Angeles, serving as chairman until 2007. The company produced over two thousand hours of prime-time television, including the groundbreaking Hollywood Women series—the first part of a ten-season Hollywood franchise for ITV—and ten seasons of the American flagship show Bridezillas, both created by Green. September Films’ feature films include the Oscar-nominated Solomon & Gaenor (7 awards) and House of America (6 awards). The company also won the Montreux Rose d’Or for Ozzy Osbourne Uncut. Green was executive producer on all three award-winning productions.
In 2007, after September Films was acquired by DCD Media plc, Green joined the production and distribution group, initially as group chief creative officer, then CEO in 2009, and executive chairman in 2012. From October 2012 to August 2016, he served as president and chairman of September Films USA and as executive, later non-executive, director of DCD Media. He now resides in Los Angeles, where he is developing new feature film and TV projects under his Polygon banner.
Green has three children—Jessica, Samuel, and Jacob—and is a lifelong, devoted supporter of Manchester City F.C.
