Sergio Calderón has been a professional actor since 1970. After studying at the Instituto Andrés Soler of the Asociación Nacional de Actores in Mexico, he was cast in his first film, Bridge in the Jungle, based on B. Traven's novel and featuring the legendary director and actor John Huston. Thirteen years later, Calderón reunited with Huston, this time acting under Huston's direction as one of the sinister murderers in the classic Under the Volcano, alongside Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset. During this period, he also appeared on television as guest stars Malavida Valdése and El Cajón in the two double-episode season openers of the popular series "The A-Team," starring George Peppard and Mr. T.
Primarily, Calderón is highly respected and widely recognized for his extensive career spanning around fifty films. Beyond Huston, he has worked with renowned directors such as Sergio Leone, Ron Howard, Luis Puenzo, Michael Mann, and many others. Throughout his career, he has acted alongside notable actors including Anthony Quinn (Children of Sánchez), Peter Falk and Alan Arkin (The In-Laws), Robert Mitchum, James Coburn, and Rod Steiger (Duck, You Sucker!), Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard (Le Chèvre), as well as Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, and Jimmy Smits (Old Gringo).
He is perhaps best known for his role as the first alien, Head on a Stick, in the original blockbuster Men in Black, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Calderón teamed up with Jones again in The Missing, alongside Cate Blanchett and Aaron Eckhart, and portrayed Captain Villanueva, the Spanish pirate lord, in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. He also appeared in the comedy Little Fockers, featuring Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, and Barbra Streisand.
