After four years of studying acting, Werner Daehn began his career with roles in various theatre productions across Germany. His international breakthrough came in 2002 with his portrayal of the chain-smoking antagonist opposite Vin Diesel in the blockbuster film Triple X, directed by Rob Cohen. His profile quickly rose through further international projects such as The Lives of Others (2006), which received worldwide acclaim and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and The Counterfeiters (2007), which also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, earned the National Board of Review's Top Five Foreign Film Award, and received a nomination at the Online Film Critics Society Awards.
In the BBC America series Fleming, centered on James Bond, Werner portrayed Hugo Berger. In Field of Lost Shoes (2014), directed by Sean McNamara, he played the historical figure General Franz Sigel. He appeared alongside Tom Cruise as Major Ernst John von Freyend in Valkyrie (2008), directed by Bryan Singer. In 2012, he reunited with Rob Cohen for Alex Cross, starring in another U.S. blockbuster. In the summer of 2016, he filmed the international co-production Tom of Finland, directed by Finnish director Dome Karukoski.
His television work includes a lead role in NBC's Constantine, the BBC series United and 39 Steps, as well as Colditz for ITV. In Germany, he is well known for his appearances in the country's premier crime series Tatort and other popular crime dramas.
In December 2018, Werner Daehn completed filming on Medieval, a drama set in the 14th century about Czech icon and warlord Jan Zizka, who defeated the armies of the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire. He stars alongside Michael Caine, Ben Foster, and Matthew Goode. The film was scheduled for theatrical release at the end of 2019. In 2019, the Polish-German film Werewolf, which had already received festival awards, and The Operative were also set for theatrical release.
