Biografia
The New York Times praised New York University professor Andrew Levitas as having the "Midas touch" for his ongoing work across various creative fields. Levitas' Metalwork Installations® are celebrated as a pioneering fusion of photography, sculpture, and contemporary art. His "Organic Abstractions"—paintings created using homemade pigments and organic materials, sometimes incorporating entire trees—have also earned critical acclaim. In 2008, Levitas was among a select few American artists invited to exhibit with the distinguished Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Notable recent exhibitions include METALWORK PHOTOGRAPHY®: A SURVEY/WORKS BY ANDREW LEVITAS, the first solo artist show at PHILLIP'S Berkeley Square, and Metalwork Photography®: Sculptures at Phillips de Pury & Co. in Manhattan. His work has been acquired by the National Museum Wales and 10 Downing Street.
Levitas made his feature film directorial debut with Lullaby, based on his own screenplay, starring Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, and Garrett Hedlund. The film, which explores patients' rights, was lauded by Pete Hammond of Deadline as a "strong human drama," with Jenkins delivering a "very Oscar-worthy supporting turn" as a "true actor's actor."
His latest directing effort, Minamata, features Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film chronicles photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (Depp), who accepts a secret assignment from Life magazine to travel to the Japanese coastal town of Minamata and expose corporate negligence and government cover-ups surrounding one of the most devastating environmental disasters in history.
Levitas has also produced films such as The White Crow (starring Ralph Fiennes and Adele Exarchopoulos), My Zoe (Julie Delpy, Daniel Brühl, Gemma Arterton), Georgetown (Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening), Farming (Kate Beckinsale, Gugu Mbatha-Raw), The Gateway (Bruce Dern, Olivia Munn, Frank Grillo), and The Quarry (Michael Shannon), among others.
He maintains studios in New York and London and serves as a Global Patron of The Wilderness Foundation.
