Actress Svetlana Ustinova was born on May 1, 1982, in Severodvinsk, near the White Sea. The Ustinov family had no ties to cinema or theater. Since the mid-1990s, Svetlana's father, Vladimir, worked as a businessman, while her mother, Tatiana, spent her career at the "Polar Star" factory.
From a young age, Sveta was energetic and lively. After seventh grade, her parents transferred her from a regular school to a humanities-focused high school with an emphasis on foreign languages. Here, she devoted much time to her studies and quickly made friends with classmates who all aimed to enter prestigious universities.
Besides academics, Sveta took part in local KVN team competitions and performed in a youth theater club. She dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer, but Severodvinsk lacked ballet training. Initially, she planned to study at a financial university and prepared seriously for this path. After completing eleventh grade, Ustinova moved to the capital to apply to the Academy of Finance.
Early in her student years, she realized that science was not her passion; instead, she was drawn to creativity. Svetlana spent several years modeling, where her 170 cm height, sculpted figure, and long legs helped her succeed effortlessly. She appeared in several fashion projects and gained recognition among music fans through her roles in music videos for "Dynamite" and "Legal Business."
After graduating from the Institute of Cinematography in 2008, Svetlana took part in theatrical productions at the Center for Dramaturgy and Directing. A notable performance was her role in Olga Subbotina's play *Conspiracy of the Senses*.
The Moscow CDR Theater is renowned for working exclusively with contemporary theater. It has been home to unique directors such as Kirill Serebrennikov, Olga Subbotina, Vladimir Ageyev, and Mikhail Ugarov. In 2017, Ustinova joined the Anton Chekhov Moscow Art Theater troupe, debuting there in the leading role of Malva.
The year 2020 brought many significant premieres for Svetlana. On stage, she portrayed Masha in Chekhov's *The Seagull*, directed by Oskaras Korsunovas. Notably, costume designers based the characters' visual styles on each actor's personal sense of style, drawing inspiration for Ustinova's character from her Instagram account.
During her final year at the finance school, Svetlana met director Pyotr Buslov, who was casting for *Bumer: Film vtoroy* (2006). She successfully passed a competitive selection involving actresses from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
The atmosphere on set was pleasant. Talented actors like Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Andrey Merzlikin, and Aleksandr Golubev, with whom she had the chance to work, set an example for her during filming. Full of enthusiasm, she was willing to work long hours, unaffected by heat or cold.
In 2005, after deciding not to complete her studies at the Financial Institute, Sveta enrolled at VGIK under Vladimir Grammatikov’s course. Alongside her studies, she managed to find time for acting. Her first role after entering the institute was a minor part in the TV series *The Law of the Mousetrap*. One memorable performance from this period was her role as Pavlinka in the multi-part series *Smersh*.
In 2017, Ustinova participated in the Kinotavr Contest for the first time as a competitor. The film *Blokbaster* (2017), starring her and her friend Anna Chipovskaya, was part of the festival’s program. The film earned a special jury award, recognizing it "For the new level reached by genre cinema."
She also took part in Felix Mikhailov’s artistic and media project *Literature Lessons*, where theater and film actors read poetry accompanied by classical music performed by an orchestra. Fellow participants included Katerina Shpitsa, Agniya Kuznetsova, and Egor Koreshkov.
Another notable project was the fantasy-drama *Dominika* (2018), in which Svetlana starred alongside Andrey Chadov.
Following that, the film *Kupi menya* (2018) premiered, featuring Ustinova in one of the lead roles. The story follows three friends willing to do anything for happiness. Galya dreams of owning a car, seeing it as a symbol of a bright future. She believes a relationship requires little emotional investment, only physical presence. The film is filled with oligarchs, Porsches, sex, love, and dreams of a glamorous life. Alongside Svetlana, Anna Adamovich and Yuliya Khlynina starred in the film.
Shortly after, the series *Prezumptsiya nevinovnosti* (2021) premiered, with Ustinova in the lead role. The cast featured many notable actors.
In 2020, she appeared in the Russian horror film *Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa*, portraying a sinister character. This was not her first horror film; in 2016, she appeared in *Marshrut postroen*.
Ustinova is unafraid to challenge herself both artistically and personally. A significant change was her new short hairstyle, marking a new phase in her career. In 2021, she began directing the feature film *The time of the year – winter*, produced by Hype Film. This was not her first directorial work; she had previously presented a short film titled *Marusya*.
Her personal life has had its ups and downs. At 27, Svetlana married Ukrainian director Mark Gorobets. They met during the joint Russian-Ukrainian production of *Veskoe osnovanie dlya ubiystva* (2009). For love, Mark relocated to Moscow.
In 2011, the mystery series *Zakrytaya shkola* (2011-2012), directed by Gorobets, aired on the STS channel. However, the couple’s relationship deteriorated, leading to separation. Rumors suggest that intense jealousy and frequent arguments contributed to their divorce.
In 2013, Svetlana was seen at social events with Ilya Stewart, a filmmaker, producer, and founder of Hype Production, who is five years her junior. Their relationship was kept private for some time, but in 2015 they officially announced their engagement.
Svetlana and Ilya share a passion for their work as well as each other. According to the actress, her husband constantly inspires her to creative experimentation. Their collaboration led to the 2016 film *Kholodnyy front*, in which Ustinova starred, co-wrote the script, and served as producer.
They wed on June 24, 2017, with a celebration held in one of Mosfilm’s pavilions. The ceremony had a Hollywood movie theme and was attended by many prominent figures from Moscow’s high society.
