In 2009, Alberto Ammann transformed from an unknown drama student into one of Spain's most recognized actors with a single film. The year before, Ammann earned a spot among emerging talents like Penélope Cruz, Jordi Mollà, and Elena Anaya through Caras Nuevas, a discovery program by the Spanish talent agency Kuranda. That year’s jury included the casting directors of Cell 211. Although they sought a well-known actor for the lead, none could match the unknown Ammann, who ultimately won both a Goya (Spanish Academy Award) and a Spanish SAG Award for his powerful role in Cell 211, the year's top-grossing film.
Born in Córdoba, Argentina, Alberto Ammann is the son of journalist, politician, and writer Luis Alberto Ammann and Nelida Rey. From 1978 to 1982, his family moved to Spain to escape Argentina’s military dictatorship. Years later, Ammann returned to Spain to continue the acting training he had begun in Argentina with Guillermo Iani and Jolie Lobois at the renowned Juan Carlos Corazza Acting Studio.
Following his breakthrough in Cell 211, Ammann starred in Lope (2010), portraying the 16th-century playwright Lope de Vega.
In 2011, he co-starred with Daniel Brühl in Eva, a captivating science fiction film directed by Kike Maillo. He then appeared in Daniel Calpasoro’s thriller Invader as a Spanish military doctor serving as a peacekeeper in Iraq during the war. Calpasoro later cast Ammann again in his next film, Combustion.
In 2012, Ammann returned to Argentina to co-star alongside Ricardo Darín in Hernán A. Godfrid’s thriller Tesis Sobre Un Homicidio. He made his English-language debut with a guest role in the sci-fi thriller Mindscape, directed by Jorge Dorado. Back in Argentina in 2013, he starred in Miguel Cohan’s Betibú.
In 2014, Ammann traveled to Peru to co-star with Stephen Dorff in Barney Elliott’s Oliver’s Deal. He then led the cast of Antena 3’s miniseries adaptation of Miguel Sáez Carral’s bestselling novel Apaches.
In Netflix’s series Narcos, Ammann portrays Pacho Herrera, the leader of the Cali cartel. He is also set to appear in the second season of Mars, playing scientist Javier Delgado on humanity’s first mission to the red planet.
