Brenda Benet, born Brenda Ann Nelson in Los Angeles, California, on August 14, 1945, epitomized the tragic narrative of modern Hollywood. As a television actress with notable dramatic range, she built an extensive and impressive résumé of guest roles over a career lasting just over 16 years before taking her own life at 36. During her childhood and early teens, she struggled with feelings of awkwardness and insecurity due to having a darker complexion than her siblings. This led her to feel disconnected from her family and often imagine being adopted.
Brenda briefly attended UCLA, majoring in languages. She entered the entertainment industry in 1962, with her breakthrough role coming in 1964 as Jill McComb in The Young Marrieds. Throughout the '60s and '70s, she appeared on various comedy and drama shows, frequently portraying ethnic or exotic characters. Her most notable role was as a compassionate prostitute in Walking Tall (1973). During this period, she married and later divorced actor Paul Petersen. In 1969, she began a relationship with Bill Bixby, moved in with him, and they married in 1971. However, by the late '70s, they had divorced.
Benet stepped away from acting in the mid-'70s to focus on family life, and in late 1974, she gave birth to a son, Christopher Sean Bixby. Tragically, Christopher died in 1981 during a winter ski trip in California. It is believed that this loss, along with her divorce from Bixby, contributed to Brenda’s downward spiral. On April 7, 1982, in her West Los Angeles home, she arranged candles in a circle on the bathroom floor, lay down, placed a Colt .38-caliber revolver in her mouth, and pulled the trigger, dying instantly.
