Smeet Doshi is a man on a mission to achieve his dream of acting, regardless of the social and familial limitations placed on him. Born and raised in Mumbai, India, Smeet always had the desire to be an actor. His family, however, had other plans for him. Being involved in the entertainment realm is frowned upon and treated as taboo, so he placed his dream on the back burner to follow his parents' wishes to pursue a career in Engineering.
Smeet moved to Los Angeles at the age of 21 to attend graduate school at USC. It was there that his desire to act began to reappear. Instead of ignoring it, he embraced it and in 2018, he spent his first paycheck to enroll in his first acting class and hasn't stopped taking them since. Smeet began methodically navigating the ins and outs of the industry, beginning with taking his first set of headshots himself and posting the best of them on Backstage. It wasn't long before he started receiving audition requests, but nothing that came with steady promise.
Tired of waiting for his "big break," in 2022, Smeet took the proverbial bull by the horns and wrote his first short screenplay, basing the story on his own life as an immigrant who is also queer finding his way in the world. The short premiered at the prestigious Chicago South Asian Film Festival in 2023, where he connected with multiple other creatives in the industry.
Making the decision to allow Engineering to be his "fall back" job, Smeet pursued acting full time and has appeared in several shorts and student films, television mini-series', and commercials, most notably a print spot for Disney in 2024. His credits include supporting roles in The Rinse, Unholy Communion, Josephine, and Murder at the Merriweather, lead roles in Where's My Spot?, Old Man Rivers, I'm Not Ready, Rigged, and Good Candidate, which he also wrote, and television appearances in the mini-series' Queen Mom Rules and Work Retreat.
2026 will be a year filled with activity for Smeet as he has just wrapped on two projects and prepares to hit the festival circuit with his new horror short. In addition, Smeet is a part of an improv comedy team called Dainty Dolores that performs at clubs all over Los Angeles, as well as spending time creating comedic lifestyle content for online social media platforms.
"My future goals include working on a sitcom or on a network series such as The Pitt. I would really like to work with Margaret Qualley and Vera Farmiga at some point in my career. Directors I'd like to work with include Mira Nair, Kabir Akhtar, Fawzia Mirza, and others who showcase South Asian stories in such a beautiful way. I'd like to travel the United States with my improv team, and have the opportunity to continue to write and possibly direct more."
So whether he's in front of a camera, behind the lens, or on a stage making people laugh, Smeet Doshi is proving every day that cultural taboos can be overcome if it means making your life's dream come true.
