Cinzia TH Torrini was born in Florence and graduated from the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Munich, Germany. Since then, she has worked as a film director and writer. Her feature film debut, "Giocare d'azzardo," was presented at the Venice Film Festival in 1982. Three years later, she directed "Hotel Colonial," starring John Savage alongside Oscar® winners Robert Duvall and Massimo Troisi. In the following years, she directed numerous television films, often as international co-productions involving Italy, Germany, France, and Sweden.
Her TV movie "L'Aquila della Notte," featuring Elena Sofia Ricci, earned her the Best Director award at Umbria Fiction in 1993, as well as Best Film and Best Leading Actress awards at Sichuan in China, and the Valmarana Award from the Italian Cinematic Press Union. For the short film "Sweeties," starring Stefania Sandrelli and part of the "Erotic Tales" collection, she won the Golden Rocky Award at the Banff Film Festival in Canada in 1996. Her film "Iqbal," a co-production between Rai, arte, and the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation addressing child exploitation, received the Public Jury Award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 1999.
In 2000, she gained experience with period dramas through the television costume drama "Tides of Change" (2x100'), co-produced by Mediatrade and Beta. In 2003, she achieved remarkable success with "Elisa di Rivombrosa," starring Vittoria Puccini and Alessandro Preziosi for Canale 5—the first in a long-running costume drama series (13x100'). The show was sold across various European countries and won multiple awards, including four Telegatti. Her films often focus on social issues and pressing societal challenges.
In 2005, she was honored with the Order of Merit "Cavaliere Ufficiale" by the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. In 2007, she directed "Donna Detective" (6x100'), starring Lucrezia Lante della Rovere and Kaspar Capparoni. Two years later, she reunited with Vittoria Puccini to shoot the miniseries "Tutta la verità" (2x100') for Rai Uno. Through her production company Cassiopea, she produced two documentaries: the critically acclaimed "Un'incontro con Chiara" in 2007 and "The Bagnaia - the Dream of Marisa Riffeser" in 2009. She also developed and directed the seven-episode miniseries "Rebel Land" for Rai Uno in 2010.
In 2011, she directed the miniseries "The Charterhouse of Parma" (2x100'), adapted from Stendhal’s novel, a co-production between Rai Uno and France 3. The series was awarded Best Fiction of the Year in France in 2012. In 2013, she produced and directed two more documentaries through her company: "The Antinori. Vintners since 1385" and "Florence. World Capital of Arts and Handcrafts." That same year, she directed "Un'altra vita" (6x100') for Italian television, which topped audience ratings for fiction series in 2014/2015. She then co-wrote and directed the miniseries "Anna and Yusef" (2x100'), filmed in Italy and Tunisia. In 2016/17, she directed the mystery thriller "Sorelle" (6x100'), which aired successfully on Rai Uno in spring 2017.
