Michael Andrew Bridge Morpurgo, born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, UK, is a British author, poet, playwright, and librettist, renowned for his children's literature. The second child of actors Tony Van Bridge and Kippe Cammaerts, he has an older brother, director Pieter Morpurgo. Born during World War II, he and his brother were evacuated to Northumberland as children before relocating to London and later Bradwell-on-Sea. At age seven, he was sent to boarding school. Encouraged by his father, he attempted a military career but left the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst after nine months to study English, French, and Philosophy at King's College London. He worked as a teacher prior to beginning his writing career. His first book, All Around the Year, was co-authored with his mentor Ted Hughes. Morpurgo has written numerous books, many adapted into films, including Friend or Foe (1982), When the Whales Came (1989), and Private Peaceful (2012). His theatre adaptations have earned multiple accolades, including two Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards. Beyond writing, he actively supports charities focused on helping children. He has been married to Clare Morpurgo (née Lane) since 1963, and they have three children.
