While attending graduate school at USC, Clay earned both the Bush and Kodak Awards for Excellence in Cinematography, which led to an apprenticeship with ASC members. He had the honor of apprenticing under Francis Kenny (recipient of the 2012 ASC President's Award) and further honed his skills in lighting and camera techniques by observing Vilmos Zsigmond, Emmanuelle Lubezki, and Dante Spinotti on set.
Following graduation, Clay quickly filmed pilots for every major network, helping to establish the visual style for series such as Life of Luxury with Robin Leach (ABC), Gene Simmons: Family Jewels (A&E), Rattlesnake Republic (Animal Planet), and Junk Gypsies (HGTV).
His creative exploration continued through shooting and directing award-winning music videos, including Nutty: Back in Black and the Grammy-nominated Johnny Cash's America.
In 2000, he founded Martini Crew Booking, a provider of gear and services for television and film productions. During his time at Martini, Clay shot the Emmy-winning documentary The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club.
Clay expanded into directing with thursday afternoon, which garnered writing and directing awards and was featured on PBS, The Sundance Channel, and at international film festivals.
In 2003, he established Imaginaut Entertainment, Inc., producing and directing the acclaimed series Storyline Online, showcasing talents such as Elijah Wood, Betty White, James Earl Jones, and Al Gore.
Through Imaginaut, Clay recently released the award-winning documentary Popatopolis and is currently producing an uplifting HBO documentary about a pageant for young disabled girls. His ongoing projects include Mr. Twister, a documentary about an autistic young man, produced by Academy Award-winner Mark Harris.
A member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Clay lives in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles with his wife and daughter. He is currently developing several documentaries and pilots while writing two feature screenplays.
