Giovanni Marzagalli, known professionally as John Real, is widely regarded by critics as a promising director with a flair for Hollywood-style theatrics. A three-time Italy Golden Globes winner, he has established himself in the Italian film industry through standout performances in genre cinema. Hailing from Catania, this talented young filmmaker has carved a unique niche by developing a distinctive style and genre, bringing a fresh perspective that distinguishes him from traditional Italian cinema. He aims to be recognized for his unique vision and the American influences evident in his work, beginning with his film titles.
At just 21 years old in 2011, Real earned the Golden Globe for Best Breakthrough Director with his film "Native," making him the youngest director in Europe. The film premiered at the 68th Venice Film Festival in the "digital expo" section and opened the prestigious Fantasy Horror Awards in 2011. In 2012, he founded Real Dreams Entertainment Srl, a production company that quickly produced the thriller "Midway Between Life and Death" (2013). The company also handled its nationwide distribution in Italy. Critics lauded the film for its unique fusion of suspense, drama, and paranormal elements, and it was among seven Italian films representing Italy at the 2014 Oscars.
On August 7, 2014, Real appeared as a guest at the Italian Horror Fest alongside legendary directors like Dario Argento, Ruggero Deodato, and Luigi Cozzi. He received the IHF 2014 award, honoring him as a director who embodies a genre deeply rooted in Italian cinema tradition and revitalized by emerging filmmakers. The following year, he won Best Director at the I-Art Festival.
In 2017, Real ventured into episodic storytelling with the acclaimed TV series "Feel the Dead - Five Days," starring Estella Warren and William McNamara. The series garnered five awards at the Oniros Film Awards in Aosta, Italy, including Best Director, Best TV Series, and Best Horror Drama. Returning to cinema, he directed "The Music Box" (2019), which earned him four more awards, including Best Director.
Following this, Real directed the dramatic film "Breath," featuring James Cosmo and Rachel Daigh, which achieved widespread international success. He then explored psychological thriller themes with "Obsessio" (2019), winning eight awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Production. Continuing his successful streak, Real’s adventure fantasy film "The Last Redemption," starring James Cosmo, Kevin Sorbo, and Angus MacFadyen, was released in the U.S. by Vertical Entertainment and distributed worldwide, attracting significant international attention. With its intense plot, thrilling action sequences, and Real’s expert direction, "The Last Redemption" adds another compelling chapter to his impressive body of work.
