Composer of "Misty" and pianist, he was the younger brother of Linton S. Garner. By age seven, he was performing professionally on KDKA radio in Pittsburgh. After finishing high school, he entertained at schools and theaters in New York and California, and performed with the Slam Stewart Trio. He later formed his own trio and appeared at the Paris Jazz Festival in 1948. He recorded extensively throughout his career. His tours featured numerous European visits, concerts, television appearances, and live performances such as at the Seattle World's Fair. After joining ASCAP in 1955, he collaborated with Edward Heyman and Johnny Burke. His other well-known songs and instrumental works include "Dreamy," "Solitaire," "Blues Garni," "Trio," "Turquoise," "Other Voices," "No More Shadows," "Passing Through," "Dreamstreet," "Theme from 'A New Kind of Love'," "Paris Mist," "Play, Play, Play" (which received the Prix du Disque in Paris), and "Erroll's Bounce.
